Queer Softball in Boston!
HOW WE PLAY: Slow-pitch softball with a pitch arc between 6'-12'. We use 70' basepaths, start with a 1-1 ball/strike count, and courtesy fouls differ by division. There's no leading and no stealing. Rules apply to ALL players and we enforce fair play, respect for opponents, and polite behavior from all our members. We use USA Softball and NAGAAA Guidelines for on-field playing rules.
Founded in 1978, the Beantown Softball League (BSL) is the longest-running athletic organization open to gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer people and allies in New England. The League fosters community, friendly competition, and access to the sport of slow-pitch softball. The League has two seasons: Spring (May-July) and Fall Ball (Sept-Oct). In the Spring, divisions are determined by the level of play (competitive, intermediate, and recreational). In Fall Ball, teams are mixed with players of varying experience levels playing together. Players of all abilities find a fun and competitive home with us.
Our Membership is co-ed consisting of players and non-players (softball life partners, friends, ex-players, etc.). Members range in age from 20 to 73 (we're serious)! Team Rosters are restricted to 2 non-LGBTQIA+ players but allies (heterosexual players) that have played with us for 5 or more years are not counted in that restriction.
We are a non-profit 501(c)3 organization in Boston. We have hosted the Minuteman Classic (a queer national tournament) and we have a Hall of Fame (a group of inductees honored for their contributions to the League).
There are two ways to play in our Spring/Summer games:
- Participate in our Draft Clinic Days held yearly before games begin. Get drafted to an existing team or be placed on a new one! In Spring 2023 we had two new teams from clinic day - Bat Intentions and Sons a' Pitches.
- Drafted by someone who already plays on a team in the league.
